The sacred shrine of Gangotri is beautifully nestled at an altitude of 3200 meters above sea level in the midst of slender glacier surrounded by Cider and Pine forest. Exploring this holy temple during a Chotta Char Dham Tour is one of the important things for the Hindu pilgrims. The force of the fall was so high that Lord Shiva decided to take the river into his matted lock with a hope to break down its force and lightly uncurled a small tassel through which Ganga is flowing today into several streams and the one instigated from Gangotri was named as Bhagirathi. It is believed that, Pandavas came to this sacred river to carry out "Deva Yajna" in harmony for all the deaths of their kinsmen happened in the epic battle of Mahabharat.

How to Reach Gangotri?
Gangotri Temple can be reached by road easily. There are many public transportation facilities available from Uttarkashi and Rishikesh. One has to drive through National Highway 94 from Janaki to Dharasu passing through Phool Chatti, Hanuman Chatti and Barkot. After reaching Darasu, you have to take National Highway 108 which will lead you towards Gangotri via Uttarkashi. From Rishikesh this destination is about 294 KM and from Uttarkashi it is 100 KM only.
