The Holy Town of Uttarkashi is perched at a height of 1158 Metres on the Banks Of River Bhagirathi. It is a transit point of about 145 Kms from Rishikesh, enroute to Gangotri and Yamunotri, part of Chaar Dhaam Pilgrimage. The place is regarded to have similar religious significance and auspiciousness as Kashi. One of the reasons of this town being popular among pilgrims is the Famous Vishwanath Temple devoted to Lord Shiva. There sets a Unique Mahadev-Ka-Vishal Trishul, Made Of 8 Major Metals in front of the temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva killed Vakasur with this great Trishul.

Uttarkashi has become a standard Stopover for Pilgrims visiting Gangotri. It has also become apparent as an overriding centre Adventure Sports.

Places to Visit in Uttarkashi

Har Ki Doon

Roosted at an altitude of 3506 m, it is one of the popular destinations among trekkers; an ideal route to reach to this place is from Mussoorie via Yamuna Bridge, Naugaon, Purola, Sankri, Saur, Taluka and Osla. The trekking traipse passes through dense forests and hilly valleys. The Ruinsara Lake, situated 8kms far off from Osla is a major attraction. At a distance of about 73 Kms from Uttarkashi at an elevation Of 2620 Mts above the ocean level, Harsil is located on The Bank of Bhagirathi River. More This place is situated on the way to Gangotri. An amazing fact about Harsil is that Apples are cultivated in the town that has become loved countrywide due to its authentic delectable taste.

Dayara Bugyal

Exactly 28 Kms from Uttarkashi, perched at a height 3048m above the ocean level is this Offbeat Attraction that have the best scenic view of Himalayas. What attracts tourists the most to Bugyal is the trekking trail, small beautiful lake called Barnala Tal. The Best Snow Falls can be experienced in the region during winters. Gangotri and Harsli Temple is the two travelers spot close to Dayara Bugyal.

Sat Tal

The name is derived because of the 7 lakes present in the region. This stunning spot is situated 2 Km away From Harsil, just above Dharali.

Perched at an elevation of 3307 m, the major of this lake is its crystal clear water surrounded by thick grasslands. Accommodation facilities are available by the lakeside. Tourists can conveniently trek down to Yamunotri and Hanuman Chatti from here.

Nachiketa Tal

Located at a distance of 32 km from Uttarkashi, this beautiful lake is surrounded by verdant forests. There are small temples on the banks. The journey goes through terraced fields to Chaurangi Khal, but there is no proper lodging around Nachiketa, so travelers either stay at Chaurangi Khal or get back to Uttarkashi. From there a trek of 3 kilometers is needed to reach Nachiketa Tal.

The Shakti Temple

Positioned just in front of the Vishwanath Temple, Shakti temple is famous for its colossal ‘trishul’ which is 6 meters in height and 90 cm wide towards the bottom. As per Hindu mythology, this ’trishul’ was thrown by Goddess Durga on devils. Its upper part is made of iron, while the lower part of copper.

Nandanvan and Tapovan

Situated just opposite to Gangotri glacier, 6kms up from Gaumukh, around 6 km, mesmerizing views of the Shivling peak are best seen from here. The area is also a perfect place for establishing base camps for peaks like Shivling, Satopant, Bhagirathi, Kharchakund, Khal, Kalindi Kedardom and Meru among others.
